Abstract The present study attempts to examine the growth and instability in the production of cotton in World, India and Maharashtra during pre-and post-WTO period. The time series data on production, area, and yield were collected for a period from 1977–78 to 2012–13. The study period was divided into pre-WTO period (1977–78 to 1994–95) and post-WTO period (1995–96 to 2012–13). The findings of the study reveal that during pre-WTO period except Mexico and Brazil, all the countries showed the positively significant growth. Among the different countries, Australia retained the maximum growth of 18.69 per cent. Among the different states, Andhra Pradesh retained the maximum growth of 11.52 percent in production of cotton during pre-WTO period while during post-WTO period Gujarat retained the maximum growth of 9.85 per cent which was statistically significant. The district wise analysis in Maharashtra showed that Chandrapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Dhule and Jalgaon district recorded positive growth in area, production and productivity of cotton. The results revealed that instability in world cotton production was decreased from 5.22 per cent in pre-WTO period to 3.37 per cent in post-WTO period. Instability in Indian cotton production was decreased from 13.43 per cent in pre-WTO period to 10.82 per cent in post-WTO period. With regards tothe instability in cotton production in Maharashtra wasdecreasedfrom 18.04 per centduring pre-WTO period to 13.79 per cent during post-WTO period.
