Abstract

MOOC which stands for Massive Open Online Courses has brought revolution in the higher education sector; the role of libraries/librarians over the years has been discussed that of facilitators in available literature. MOOC have started to begin in Library and Information Science (LIS) fraternity as well. Although the pace and the rate at which LIS courses are offered on some of the popular MOOC website is relatively low as compare to other courses offered by these players. Some MOOC websites even don't recognize LIS as a separate discipline. Usually the institution of higher education/Universities works in collaboration with these players and these courses are tutor supported. There is an urgent need to leverage the number of LIS courses offered by the MOOC players for the professional development of LIS professionals as a continuing education mean in the changing scenario which has posed many challenges for LIS professionals. India has taken a clear lead in offering MOOC in LIS by announcing the schedule of its beginning by means of ambitious SWAYAM platform. This paper will outline the MOOC offered in LIS and other interdisciplinary subjects
