Abstract

Unpaid household domestic service work which forms a major part of the household non-market production goes unreported in the accounting framework of the System of National Accounts (SNA) and remains invisible in the official statistical system. The services that result from production of services for own use by households is an indispensable factor that contributes to the well-being of household and economy. Therefore, recognition of its importance and the need to understand its nature and role has been increasing. In this article, an attempt has been made to estimate value of unpaid household services using the results of Time Use Survey (TUS) conducted by National Statistical Office (NSO) for the first in India during January–December 2019.The TUS provides a framework for measuring time dispositions by the population on different activities. The survey measures the participation rate and time spent on paid activities, care activities, unpaid activities, etc. This article also presents the value of unpaid Household service work done by women to highlight the contribution of women to the well-being of Households.
