Abstract Self-reliance in energy is vital for economic development of any nation. Ushering in of the Green Revolution in India through adoption of high yielding varieties, use of balanced dose of fertilizers and chemicals. availability of irrigation water and use of improved farm equipment has resulted in 4–8 fold increase in farm productivity. Simultaneously, it resulted in higher demand for energy due to increased cropping intensity as well as to ensure timeliness of operation.
