Study and Operational Experiences of STATCOM for Emerging Grid with Renewable Power Network

Abstract

The growing energy market and the need for an environment friendly sustainable energy source motivated India to focus on Renewable Energy Sources.

Government of India has set a target for establishing 175 GW of renewable power by 2022 which includes 100GW of Solar and 60 GW of Wind power apart from other sources of renewable energy. The emerging Electrical Grid with addition of multiple renewable generations and load centres is becoming more dynamic and critical. These renewable energy sources when implemented in large scale without any specialized controls may impact stability and reliability of the Grid System.

The renewable power generators are unable to cater to the varying reactive power demand required for transmission of the power due to their inherent incapability. Thus, sufficient dynamic reactive compensation needs to be provided in the grid to ensure grid stability.

Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is one of the sources of dynamic reactive compensation which can provide fast and varying reactive power requirement in the Grid. Due to its fast response and linear de-rating factor, STATCOM excels all other FACTS devices like Static VAR Compensator (SVCs) and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors (TCSC) etc.

This paper presents the study on use of STATCOM for providing dynamic reactive support in the RE rich Grid. The study investigates the impact of penetration of renewable power network on steady state performance as well as dynamic stability of the Grid and how the voltage stability control can be achieved through STATCOM. The operational experiences and challenges pertaining to STATCOM installations are also deliberated in the paper.
