Abstract School herbal garden (SHG) is a dedicated space within school premises devoted to growing a specific group of plants that have medicinal and culinary value in Indian system and are used in day to day life. SHGs established in every school Campus as offers awareness and “real-life” meaning of medicinal plants to the students. SHGs will engage students in a dynamic and eco-friendly environment to observe, learn, discover, nurture, and do experiment with medicinal plants. SHG is a living repository-cum-laboratory where lessons are learned from real live experiments rather than text book examples. National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of AYUSH, provides financial assistance for creation of SHGs throughout India. NMPB provides financial assistance of Rs. 25,000 per school for an area of 500 sq. m. for the establishment of the SHG in first year followed by grant of Rs. 7,000 per school is granted as maintenance cost for the next four years. In five year periodically 2015-16 to 2019-2020, 31 projects for the establishment of SHGs were sanctioned and the progress is discussed herein.
