Abstract

Although the increased support prices are announced for 23 crops every year under the minimum support price scheme (MSPS), the benefit of this scheme has not reached to majority of the farmers mainly due to poorly planned procurement system over the years. Without implementing a fairly equitable procurement system for all the mandated crops and covering all the states, the objective of MSPS cannot be achieved. In this article, while demonstrating the state of procurement of crops in India, we suggest many policy measures to have better and equitable procurement system that can benefit majority of farmers cultivating different crops.
